The department was established in October 1996.
At the very outset the department trained students for BA in economics but now it turus out professionals in three specialities and five specializations:
- “Finance and Credit”, specialisation: “Banking”, “Financial Management”;
- “Management of Organizations” specialization “Strategic Management”;
- “Accounting, economic analysis and audit”, specialization “Accounting, analysis and audit in commercial organization”

There are three main forms of training at the department:
- Case – study technology (with elements of distant learning);
- Traditional extra – mural (correspondence learning);
- Learning by internet (external lerning).
The first turn-out of the department graduates amounted only to 42 people in 2001, but for 2006 it was already 217 people.
Graduates questionaire for 2004 showed Heat 32% of respondents got promotion upon graduation while the respective figure for 2005-2006 was up to 49%, thus demonstrating the quality facto of training.
The growing regional coverage with the department’s education al services appears to be another proof of high quality training: in 2003 students taking the course of training at the Department represented only 18 regions of the Russian Federation as compared to 30 regions in 2006 (166 per cent increase), with people coming from such countries as Belorussia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, the Ukraine, Lithuania and Latvia as well.
Almost all students of the Department work predominantly in banking industry, (“Sberbank”, “PromStroyBank”, “Baltiysky Bank”, “AlphaBank”, etc.)
The department also trains specialists acquiring the second higher education.
